WORDS : IN 1949, MICHELANGELO ANTONIONI’S SHORT FILM, ‘SUPERSTIZIONE’, DEPICTS THE FINDINGS OF A SURVEY ON APOTROPAIC RITUALS CONDUCTED BY THE FAMOUS FILM-MAKER, IN WHICH THE THEME IS BELIEFS IN MAGIC AND SUPERSTITIOUS PRACTICES IN A VILLAGE IN THE MARCHE REGION OF ITALY.

FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF ANTONIONI AND AFTER STUDIES OF POPULAR BELIEFS FOUND IN CENTRAL AND SOUTHERN ITALY, I AIMED TO REINTERPRET THAT WHICH WAS DISCOVERED. RITUALS USED AS A DEFENSE FROM STERILITY, SICKNESS, THE EVIL EYE OR DEATH, SEEM IMPROBABLE. YET, PERHAPS THERE IS SOMETHING MORE, SOMETHING DIFFERENT: A SENSE OF THINGS AND MATERIAL FILLED WITH FURTHER MEANINGS TRANSFORMING A HABIT INTO A SYMBOL.
